Positive vs Negative Statements

Blog Article

The words you use with your child have the power to inspire them to do better or reinforce their undesirable behavior. When parents react in anger, they often say things that they can't possibly follow up on. These negative statements often don't result in the desired outcome and instead create more frustration for everyone.

It helps to understand how your words are perceived by your child. When you speak with love rather than anger, the results are much more positive.

Negative: Stop arguing with me!    Positive: We can discuss this as soon as the arguing stops.

Negative: Don't shout at me!    Positive: I'll listen when the shouting stops.

Negative: Clean your room so we can go shopping.    Positive: We can go shopping after your room is clean.

Negative: You're not going out without your coat.    Positive: You can go out as soon as you have your coat.

Negative: Your room is always a mess!    Positive: I love it when your room is clean.
