It's often a challenge to find an activity that's fun for the entire family, and we recommend doing things that the kids enjoy. Watching them have a great time will make the parents happy too!
When you ask your kids, "What do you want to do this weekend?", is the answer usually, "I don't know."? They might need a little encouragement to turn off the TV, put down the video games and do something different.
Here are a few suggestions for indoor activities when the weather doesn't permit outdoor fun. Classic board games such as Monopoly, Rummikub, Checkers, Chess, Yahtzee, Jenga, Backgammon, Connect 4, Chinese Checkers, Scrabble, Battleship, Sequence, Parcheesi and Sorry help children develop reasoning skills. Even very young children enjoy card games such as Memory, Go fish, War and Crazy Eights.
Jigsaw puzzles are fun for all ages, starting with easier ones and building up to more challenging puzzles as your child gets older.
One of the very basic family activities is reading books together. Let your child choose the book, and try not to resist when they select the same book dozens of times!
For outdoor activities, Texas has a lot to offer. If your child has gotten bored with the neighborhood playground, find another neighborhood with a playground that has unique challenges. There are great locations for hiking, picnicking, bike-riding or swimming. Visit a nearby museum, library, miniature golf, video arcade or bowling alley. Take your child for an ice cream cone or snowcone, or just spend some time in the back yard tossing water balloons or stargazing on a clear evening.
Your child's teacher at Endless Discoveries Child Development Center will have some great ideas for family adventures. You might be surprised at how enjoyable the time is that you spend with your child, and the next time you ask "What do you want to do?", they'll have some great suggestions!
