If communication is difficult, sign language is a wonderful tool that allows even small children to express themselves. Praise for learning something new helps to reinforce self confidence and self esteem.
Many of the techniques that are valuable in parenting all children are also effective with Down syndrome children, such as speaking clearly and calmly, playing, singing songs and reading books together. Showing them how to do something instead of just giving instructions can help them understand better.
Following daily routines helps children feel more secure when they can anticipate the next activity.
