Even children react to holiday stress

Blog Article

Children often feel the stress of Christmas, but there are ways that parents and caregivers can help them deal with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

Try to keep the daily routine the same as usual, including getting adequate sleep and not over-indulging in unhealthy eating. Set a good example for your children by eating healthy meals and getting plenty of sleep and exercise. Outdoor play has a calming effect on everyone, even when the weather isn't perfect. Children react to their parents' behavior and often pick up on their stress.

Be honest with your kids about what to expect for Christmas and that some gifts might not be affordable. Discuss the cost of gifts they might want, and decide together what is a reasonable amount to spend for each family member. Be sure to talk about the importance of being grateful.

Set aside some time each day for outdoor activities together as a family. Too much indoor time can be stressful for children and adults. When outdoor events aren't possible, plan some inside activities with real interaction, such as board games, puzzles, baking, or crafts. Family holiday rituals can be meaningful and fun, and children look foward to these special family times.

Find a way that your family can help others, such as selecting toys for a toy drive, donating clothes to a shelter, or working together to choose food for a local food pantry. This is a great way to teach compassion and kindness.
