What's the scoop on peanuts?

Blog Article

Peanut allergy is one of the most common causes of severe allergy attacks. For some people with peanut allergy, even tinyamounts of peanuts can cause a serious reaction that can even be life-threatening. For the safety of all children enrolled at Endless Discoveries, we strictly prohibit any food made with nut products.

An allergic response to peanuts usually occurs within minutes after exposure. Peanut allergy signs and symptoms can include skin reactions, tingling in or around the mouth, digestive problems, shortness of breath or runny nose.

More severe symptoms of anaphylaxis are constriction of airways, swelling of the throat, drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse, dizziness or loss of consciousness. If your child shows any of these symptoms, call 911 and seek emergency treatment immediately.

Exposure to peanuts can occur in various ways. The most common cause of peanut allergy is eating foods containing peanuts. Sometimes direct skin contact can trigger an allergic reaction. An unintended introduction of peanuts is generally the result of food being exposed to peanuts during processing or handling. It's also possible for an allergic reaction to occur by inhaling dust or aerosols containing peanuts, from a source such as peanut flour or peanut oil cooking spray.

Food allergies are most common in children, especially toddlers and infants, but as they mature, they are less likely to react to food that triggers allergies. There is evidence, however, that introducing at-risk babies to peanuts may reduce their risk of developing food allergies. It's best, though, to discuss the best approach with your child's doctor.

Make sure the staff at Endless Discoveries Saginaw and Endless Discoveries Glen Rose are aware of any possible allergies. The health and safety of all of our children is our primary concern.
