What is child-led learning?

Blog Article

Whether you choose public school, private school or homeschooling, there are ways that parents can make learning fun for their children by presenting subject matter naturally based on the child's interests.

Experience-based learning often holds a child's attention by keeping him actively involved in the pursuit of knowledge. Most children don't like textbooks, workbooks, quizzes, rote memorization, subject schedules, and lengthy periods of physical inactivity. It is natural for children to want to read, write, play with numbers, and learn about society, and children learn best when they are following their interests and curiosity with the help and resources from supportive parents. For instance, cooking is a way of learning science and math naturally from recipes.

When a child shows an interest in plants, it's exciting to plant some seeds and watch them grow. This might progress to planting a vegetable garden, with the added benefit of harvesting, preparing and eating the vegetables they grew from seeds.

A trip to the library, museum or art gallery might stimulate a child's interest in creating his own artwork. Turn him loose with some chalk, crayons or watercolors, and you'll be amazed at his natural abilities.

Board games and card games reinforce literacy and math skills, along with verbal communication and cooperation skills. You might be surprised that your child is able to "out-think" you in games like Memory, Monopoly, Chess, Scrabble and Battleship.

"Doing real things" brings about healthy mental development and valuable knowledge. With a little guidance from parents, the world becomes an exciting place for exploring new ideas.
