Dealing with Anger in Children

Blog Article

We all have anger issues occasionally. As long as we don't injure ourselves, other people or property, anger is a normal human emotion.

Children need some guidance in managing this strong emotion, and the most effective way to teach them the basics of anger management is by modeling appropriate behavior.

Parents and educators can help children navigate the rough waters of anger by staying calm, attentively listening to the child's problem, giving praise for appropriate behavior, using brief time outs (one minute for each year of the child's age) and practicing problem-solving skills.

One effective method of helping the child release his feelings of anger is to go outdoors, focus completely on the child and ask him to find a small rock to pour all of his anger into, either silently or verbally, and then throw it as hard as he can. The result of this ten-minute "therapy session" is immediate and surprising, and it works for all ages, even adults!
